Microplásticos y salud reproductiva femenina: evidencias actuales sobre fertilidad, gestación y desarrollo fetal

Introducción: La presencia de microplásticos en tejidos humanos ha despertado una creciente preocupación debido a sus posibles efectos sobre la salud reproductiva femenina y el desarrollo fetal. Estudios recientes indican que estas partículas pueden atravesar barreras biológicas y alcanzar la placenta, el líquido amniótico y los tejidos reproductivos, desencadenando procesos inflamatorios, estrés oxidativo y alteraciones endocrinas que comprometen la fertilidad y los resultados del embarazo. Objetivo: Revisar la evidencia científica actual sobre los efectos de los microplásticos en la fertilidad femenina, el embarazo y el desarrollo fetal. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión integradora de la literatura siguiendo las recomendaciones del protocolo PRISMA. Se identificaron 37 estudios en las bases de datos PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science y Embase, de los cuales siete cumplieron los criterios de elegibilidad y fueron incluidos en el análisis final. Resultados: Los estudios demostraron la presencia de microplásticos en la placenta, el líquido amniótico, el meconio y los tejidos reproductivos humanos. La exposición se asoció con disfunción ovárica, alteraciones hormonales, disminución de la calidad de los ovocitos, inflamación placentaria, restricción del crecimiento intrauterino y alteraciones del desarrollo embrionario y fetal. Los principales mecanismos implicados fueron el estrés oxidativo, la apoptosis celular y la desregulación del eje hipotálamo hipófisis ovario. Conclusión: La evidencia disponible sugiere que los microplásticos representan un posible factor de riesgo para la salud reproductiva femenina y el desarrollo fetal. No obstante, son necesarios estudios clínicos prospectivos y la estandarización de los métodos diagnósticos para establecer relaciones causales y fundamentar estrategias preventivas y políticas de salud pública.
