Abstract

Introduction: Femur fractures result from various adversities that can affect an individual, such as trauma or osteoporosis, impacting people of all ages. Due to the lack of literature on the subject in Mato Grosso (MT), this study aims to investigate the incidence of different types of femur fractures in the state of Mato Grosso.

Methodology: This is a retrospective, population-based, and observational study based on SIH/DataSUS data. The primary variables were femur fracture types, sex, days of hospitalization, etc. The data were recorded in an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using R software, version 4.5.

Results: This research included 14,842 patients, of whom 59.32% were men and 40.68% were women; the year with the highest incidence was 2024, with 73.55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The most frequent type of fracture was proximal, which also had the highest average length of stay at 6.65 days. Additionally, the elderly showed the highest incidence and hospitalization rates for proximal fractures, while young people had more diaphyseal fractures; the mortality rate was 1.73%.

Conclusion: The year 2024 had the highest incidence of femur fractures. Males were the most affected, particularly elderly men—an age group that experiences more hospitalizations resulting from these fractures. This study has limitations, as other variables of interest are unavailable in the information system. Consequently, this study may be complemented by new original research on the topic.
